BERTIE COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - A proposal to add Chowan and Washington County to the Bertie-Martin Regional Jail is in the early stages. While some agree with the idea, Bertie County’s sheriff says he isn’t in support of it.
With a 90-bed capacity, Bertie-Martin Regional Jail houses detainees for Bertie and Martin County, but a proposal is looking to expand the jail.
“It’s a no-brainer,” Martin County Manager Drew Batts said. “When you can put four counties together, combine the resources, combine the powers, it’s such a good opportunity.”
