SEATTLE — The Seattle City Council voted Tuesday to expand the city’s year-old closed-circuit television pilot program , drawing backlash from civil rights advocates, immigration groups, and residents who warned the move will deepen mistrust in city governance and policing.
The vote adds cameras in the Stadium District ahead of the 2026 World Cup, as well as around Garfield High School and Capitol Hill’s Cal Anderson Park. City documents say funding is still needed for the park installations in 2025 and 2026. No installation dates have been set.
During two hours of public comment, more than 120 people urged councilmembers to stop the rollout, citing fears of over-policing, privacy violations, and possible use of surveillance data in federal immigration cases.
