HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -- The six-year-old boy injured in the Kipona Festival crash has awakened from a coma, his family said in a statement.

Faiz Sharif suffered serious injuries, including several broken bones, on Sept. 1 when police said a woman drove her minivan around barriers and through the festival as it was ending. Two other people were injured in the crash.

Sharif's family said the boy had not fully regained consciousness since then, until now.

"By God’s mercy, Faiz is showing encouraging signs of improvement," the Sharif family said in a statement Tuesday. "His breathing tube has been removed, he is stabilizing and after several days in a coma, he has opened his eyes and shown basic signs of awareness."

His condition remains serious, the family said.
