A married kayaker who staged his own death to start anew with another woman has described his scheme as a "crazy, emotional dream". ‌

Ryan Borgwardt, 46, sent a text to his wife Emily saying he loved her and that he was off to a lake to watch the Northern Lights, only to capsize his kayak and vanish. The father of three had plans to begin a fresh life with a woman in Georgia, and so he cycled through the night to catch a bus, hoping it would be the first step of his intricate journey. ‌

However, after being eventually caught - when police tracked his movements using data from his computer - Borgwardt confessed to detectives that he was a failure and labelled his plan to flee to the country at the crossroads of Europe and Asia a "crazy, emotional dream." ‌
