AUSTIN, Texas — A man suspected of shooting an Austin police officer early Wednesday near Zilker Park is in custody, according to the Austin Police Department (APD).
The officer was shot around 4 a.m. in the 700 block of Azie Morton Road while responding to reports of a stolen vehicle.
As of 8:35 a.m., police said one person was in custody and believed to be involved in the shooting.
APD Chief Lisa Davis said during a media briefing that the officer was conducting a park curfew check and had called for a tow truck for the stolen vehicle when two people emerged from a tree line. According to APD, a male suspect shot a female suspect in the back of the head before shooting the officer. The officer returned fire, though it is unclear if the suspect was hit.
