TEMPE, AZ (AZFamily) — An electric vehicle charging at a Tempe home caught fire overnight, with the blaze then spreading to the home.

Firefighters from Tempe, Phoenix and Guadalupe responded to a home near 48th Street and Baseline Road around 1 a.m. on Wednesday. A Volkswagen ID4 that was plugged into the charger caught fire in the carport, and the fire had spread into the single-family home.

First responders attacked the fire inside the home and were then able to search the home.

Once crews got containment of the fire, they used specialized tactics to ensure the vehicle’s battery was fully extinguished, including using a thermal imaging camera, a Cold Cut Cobra and targeted suppression of hot spots.
