Eight trade students from Wolf Creek Job Corps in Glide, Oregon shadowed two wildfire crews on assignment on the Windy Rock fire this week.

The Windy Rock fire, which was first reported in Powell County on Aug. 14, has reached over 6,025 acres and is now 21% contained. Over 800 firefighters are currently working the fire.

The Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) shared a story of the students’ experiences.

The students are earning Red Cards, their official qualification to work as firefighters, while studying trades at the job corps. While in Montana, they integrated with the crews, assisting in wildland fire mobile kitchens and basecamp operations.
