Niagara-on-the-Lake’s heritage committee has approved a demolition permit for two houses on Victoria Street as part of Shaw Festival’s $50-million rebuild of the Royal George Theatre.

But the town’s staff and consultants hired to review Shaw’s heritage applications said losing the two buildings will have a “negative impact” on the Queen-Picton Heritage Conservation District.

The two structures are designated under the town’s Queen-Picton Heritage Conservation District, “reflecting their important contextual contribution to the character” of the area.

The two properties are 178 Victoria St., which has a two-storey pre-1900s residential building with a detached garage and small barn, and 188 Victoria St., which has a two-storey commercial building that had previously been a residence.
