WASHINGTON — A blown transformer and oil leak sent black fumes into the sky above Pepco's Northeast D.C. energy facility as plant workers were evacuated on Wednesday afternoon.

According to DC Fire and EMS, nobody had been injured by the fire. At 6:57 p.m. firefighters reported that the fire had been put out. DC Fire said they would stay in the area as investigators tried to figure out what started the fire in the first place.

Road closures were issued in the area surrounding the plant's location on 3400 Benning Road Northeast as the Metropolitan Police Department's traffic desk responded to the fire. These closures included the ramps on DC-295 northbound and southbound exits to Benning Road. The following road closures were reported Wednesday afternoon:
