MONTVILLE, Conn. (WFSB) - A new program launched at Corrigan Correctional Center is pairing incarcerated individuals with puppies they’ll train to become service dogs for veterans with disabilities.
Three dogs, Tom, Scout, and Ramapo, are now living inside the facility during the week as part of a partnership between the Connecticut Department of Correction and America’s VetDogs, a nonprofit that trains service animals for veterans in need.
Over the next 15 months, selected inmates will train the dogs in basic obedience and specialized tasks, including retrieving items, opening doors, and providing support for veterans with physical disabilities, PTSD, or traumatic brain injuries.
“It’s going to be a joyful journey to help others in need — and that way, we can pay for our crimes,” said
