ALGOMA, Wis. (WBAY) - Wisconsin is known for cheese and beer, but the wine industry has been making its mark on the state for decades.
In Door County, Algoma is home to northeast Wisconsin’s first winery.
Sitting on Navarino Street across from Lake Michigan, in many ways, Von Stiehl Winery has stayed the same.
“The basic science of winemaking hasn’t really changed over the years,” says Aric Schmiling, the co-owner of Von Stiehl Winery.
It’s a different story when it comes to the technology that gets the wine into bottles, onto store shelves, and ultimately to people.
“A good day back in the 90s was 150 cases. Now, a good day is 1000, 1200 cases,” says Aric Schmiling.
The now-expansive winery with more than 40 flavors of wine, and even some ciders, had a modest beginning.
