Two police officers have been charged following the death of a 35-year-old man several days after his arrest in south-west Melbourne last year.
On Thursday, Homicide Squad detectives charged a 29-year-old male constable and a 45-year-old male sergeant with negligent manslaughter.
It followed the arrest of 35-year-old Luke Briggs in Hoppers Crossing in July 2024, who subsequently died in hospital eight days later.
In a statement, a solicitor from Robinson Gill Lawyer, who is representing Mr Briggs' family, said they were still coming to terms with their loss.
"It is plain to see that the family of Luke Briggs have been left utterly distraught by the death of their loved one, Luke, and the subsequent delays in the case," solicitor Sarah Condon said.
