Charlie Kirk, a prominent ally of former President Donald Trump, was shot on Wednesday during an event at Utah Valley University. Reports indicate that Kirk was delivering a presentation when the incident occurred. A university spokesperson confirmed, "to the best of our knowledge he was hit and taken with his security team away from the premises."

Kirk was subsequently hospitalised, and campus police confirmed on X that a suspect is now in custody. The police statement read: "Today at about 12:10 a shot was fired at the visiting speaker, Charlie Kirk. He was hit and taken from the location by his security. Campus police is investigating, a suspect is in custody."

In response to the shooting, Donald Trump expressed his concern on his Truth Social platform, stating, "We must all pray for Charlie Kirk, who has been shot. A great guy from top to bottom. GOD BLESS HIM!"

FBI Director Kash Patel also addressed the situation on X, saying, "We are closely monitoring reports of the tragic shooting involving Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University. Our thoughts are with Charlie, his loved ones, and everyone affected." He added that FBI agents would be on the scene promptly.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox stated he had been briefed on the incident and emphasised that the attacker would "be held fully accountable." He condemned the violence, asserting, "Violence has no place in our public life. Americans of every political persuasion must unite in condemning this act."

Videos circulating on social media captured Kirk speaking into a handheld microphone beneath a white tent adorned with the slogans "The American Comeback" and "Prove Me Wrong" just before the shooting occurred.

This incident highlights a troubling trend of political violence in the United States, which has seen various attacks across the ideological spectrum. Notable incidents include the assassination of a Minnesota state lawmaker and her husband in June, the firebombing of a Colorado parade, and an arson attack on the home of Pennsylvania’s Jewish governor earlier this year.

Former Utah congressman Jason Chaffetz, who attended the event, recounted hearing a single shot and witnessing Kirk retreat. He described the situation as unsettling, noting, "It seemed like it was a close shot." Chaffetz remarked on the light police presence at the event, stating that while Kirk had some security, it was insufficient. "Utah is one of the safest places on the planet," he added. "And so we just don’t have these types of things."

Charlie Kirk co-founded Turning Point USA in 2012, aiming to promote conservative values on college campuses. Initially struggling, the organisation gained traction and became a significant player in conservative politics, especially after aligning with Trump during the 2016 election. Kirk has since become a well-known figure in conservative media, often engaging in cultural debates and advocating for right-leaning policies.
