Emergency services responded swiftly to a serious incident on the M6 this morning, where an overturned lorry caught fire. The accident occurred on the northbound stretch of the motorway between Junction 37 Kendal and Junction 39 Shap, leading to significant traffic disruptions since the early hours.
National Highways reported that all trapped traffic has now been released past the scene. However, they confirmed that Lane 3 of the three lanes on the M6 southbound between Junction 38 and Junction 37 remains closed.
Multiple emergency services, including Cumbria Fire & Rescue, Cumbria Police, and National Highways Traffic Officers, have been deployed to manage the situation. A spokesperson for National Highways stated, "M6 northbound between J37 Kendal and J39 Shap Cumbria ROAD CLOSED. Due to an overturned lorry that is also on fire."
In light of the chaos, Highways England has implemented a diversion route for motorists. Drivers are advised to exit the motorway at Junction 36 and follow a route marked with a hollow diamond symbol on local road signs. The diversion involves taking the A590 westbound to the Brettargh Holt junction, turning right onto the B6261 at Shap Toll Bar junction, and then left at M6 Junction 39.
Motorists are being urged to avoid the affected area if possible, as traffic remains heavy. The situation is ongoing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
