CLEVELAND, Ohio — Despite facing calls for censure and a swirl of controversy , Councilman Joe Jones not only won his primary, but he also finished with more votes than any other City Council candidate citywide.
Jones tallied 1,070 votes in a primary election that saw low turnout citywide, outpacing his opponents in Ward 1. He even outpaced candidates in other races, including Austin Davis (950) in Ward 7 and Kevin Conwell (938) in Ward 9.
Some candidates in other races won a higher percentage of the votes, but because Ward 1 had the highest turnout in Cleveland, Jones came away with the most ballots cast in his name, according to unofficial results posted Tuesday night.
Jones ended up with 60% of the vote, followed by state Rep. Juanita Brent who won about 30%, or 537 votes. Three
