Since returning to the White House, President Trump has made ending the Russia-Ukraine War a signature foreign policy goal. But his central premise that Ukraine cannot effectively stand up to a stronger power like Russia is flat wrong — and dangerously so.

In a recent post on Truth Social, he claimed, “It is very hard, if not impossible, to win a war without attacking an invader’s country. It’s like a great team in sports that has a fantastic defense, but is not allowed to play offense. There is no chance of winning! It is like that with Ukraine and Russia.” While the claim may make intuitive sense, Trump’s logic is ahistorical and factually incorrect.
