Flags around Iowa will be at half-staff on Thursday, Sept. 11, until sunset to mark Patriot Day.

Gov. Kim Reynolds ordered all flags to be lowered on public grounds. Individuals and businesses are encouraged to do the same.

Why are flags at half-staff?

Flags around Iowa will remain at half-staff in memory of those who died in the Sept. 11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.

This year marks the 24th memorial of two hijacked planes crashing into the Twin Towers in New York. In total, 2,977 people died in the 9/11 attacks. This includes those who died later due to the injuries at the Twin Towers, the 125 people killed at the Pentagon attack and all 246 passengers as well as crew on the four planes, according to BBC .
