Thursday marks 24 years since the Sept. 11 attacks against the United States.

Thousands of people, including hundreds of first responders, died in the terrorist attacks – and thousands more were injured when four planes crashed into the World Trade Center towers, the Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Here is a list of events happening in North Carolina to honor the lives that were lost.

9/11 stair climb events at NC State, UNC, Fort Bragg

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill held a 9/11 Stair Climb beginning at 6 a.m. at Kenan Memorial Stadium. Participants climbed 2,071 steps to symbolize the 110 floors first responders climbed at the World Trade Center 24 years ago.
