SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - On Sept. 11, 2001, hijackers affiliated with Al Qaeda took over several U.S. passenger jets, crashing them into New York City’s twin towers, the Pentagon and targeting other locations.

Saturday, the Springfield area is remembering the 441 first responders, including 343 firefighters, who bravely gave their lives in the service of others on that day. They’ll climb 110 flights of stairs, matching the stories of the World Trade Center.

The Springfield Area Memorial Stair Climb will be held Saturday, Sept. 13, at Hammons Field. The gates open at 7:00 a.m., with the opening ceremony scheduled for 8:30 a.m.

Registration is still open for the stair climb. All donations raised by the event will go to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.
