LINCOLN, Neb. —

Twenty-four years after the 9/11 attacks, our community is remembering those who died.

ROTC members and first responders spent the morning climbing dozens of flights of stairs at Memorial Stadium to honor the 9/11 victims.

They climbed 2,071 steps. That is the equivalent of the 110 flights of stairs of the World Trade Center.

To honor the first responders who climbed the steps of the World Trade Center and never made it back down, the participants only counted the stairs they climbed up.

Some also wore weighted vests to simulate what the firefighters felt as they wore their equipment.
