CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - A Dorchester County man is facing charges in the Midlands over allegations of unemployment insurance fraud.
The South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division says Matthew Howard Morgenthaler, 29, of Summerville, is charged with obtaining property worth $10,000 or more under false pretenses, first-degree computer crime valued at more than $10,000 and forgery of $10,000 or more.
He was charged after the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce requested SLED to investigate.
Affidavits state that, between January 2021 and June 2022, Morgenthaler applied for and received benefits through the state’s unemployment insurance program in amounts over $10,000 while he was employed by a car sales company.
