PORTSMOUTH, N.H. —

Ceremonies were held across New Hampshire on Thursday to mark 24 years since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

In Portsmouth, a piece of a beam from inside the World Trade Center towers is on display, one of more than 2,000 similar artifacts that were sent across the country.

David Shane was a firefighter and paramedic in New York City when he started his shift on Sept. 11, 2001.

"It was like, there were no birds flying out there, and the water was calm on the road by the roadways, and something just didn't seem right," he said. "And then this happened."

Shane was part of a team assigned to Ground Zero after two planes struck the towers, causing them to collapse.
