While the damage from wildfires in British Columbia this year is significantly lower than the 2024 and 2023 wildfire seasons, the number of hectares burned is well above the historical average.
As of Sept. 11, a total of 841,488 hectares had been burned in 1,241 wildfires, according to information from the BC Wildfire Service.
The province’s wildfire season begins April 1 and ends March 31.
During the 2024 wildfire season, 1,697 wildfires destroyed 1,081,159 hectares, and in 2023, the worst wildfire season on record in British Columbia, 2,296 wildfires were reported, consuming 2,896,204 hectares.
The 2021 wildfire season saw 869,300 hectares burned in 1,647 wildfires.
