Thorold councillors carefully waded into the waters of governance reform, with some raising the alarm about a collision with the dreaded iceberg called amalgamation.
On Tuesday, Coun. Ken Sentance introduced a motion for a staff report on options for reducing the size of council, including potential benefits and drawbacks, financial implications and comparisons with other municipalities.
He said it comes on the heels of the minister of municipal affairs and housing formally requesting a review of municipal governing models related to two-tier municipal governments, including Niagara, reviewing whether it “supports or hinders the construction of new housing and the provision of effective local governance.”
