Thorold councillors have carefully waded into the waters of governance reform, with some raising the alarm about a collision with the dreaded iceberg called amalgamation.
On Tuesday, Coun. Ken Sentance put forth an approved motion for staff to prepare a report on options for reducing the size of city council, including potential benefits and drawbacks, financial implications and comparisons with other municipalities.
Thorold’s government has eight councillors and one mayor.
He said it comes on the heels of the minister of municipal affairs and housing formally requesting a review of municipal governing models related to two-tier municipal governments, including Niagara, reviewing whether it “supports or hinders the construction of new housing and the provision of effective local governa
