Global News has announced the layoff of 45 employees across its newsrooms, primarily affecting British Columbia and Alberta. According to Jenny Yuen, a spokesperson for Unifor, the union representing the affected workers, the layoffs include 22 positions in British Columbia, 23 in Alberta, and one in the eastern division of Global. Among those let go, 26 were journalists.

Lana Payne, the national president of Unifor, expressed concern over the layoffs, stating, "The most recent Global News layoffs are a devastating blow to local news across the country and to our democracy. We will support our members through this difficult and uncertain time."

In response to the layoffs, a spokesperson for Corus Entertainment, the parent company of Global News, issued a statement explaining the decision. "As part of our efficiency review process across Corus, we have made some difficult but necessary changes to create a more sustainable future for the company and our news division," the spokesperson said.

The statement further elaborated on the company's strategy, noting, "We are applying new workflows and ways of working, using the latest technology that will enable us to pave the way forward for the future of Global News. As a result, certain roles within some stations have been impacted."

Corus emphasized its ongoing commitment to delivering news, stating, "Our commitment to serving our audience across the country remains stronger than ever, and we will continue to tell important local news stories that matter to Canadians. Corus is committed to providing information to our audiences and remains dedicated to upholding our responsibility as a trusted news source."
