A House Republican in a ruby red district announced Thursday he will not run for re-election, shocking the internet.

Rep. Morgan Luttrell (R-TX) has served as U.S. Representative for Texas's 8th congressional district since 2023. He said Thursday he will no run again in next year's midterm election.

Luttrell said he's proud of the progress made on his priorities, including strengthening the border, standing up for veterans, and being a "strong voice for Texas."

"But over the July 4th weekend, standing in floodwaters alongside my neighbors, I had a moment of clarity. It reminded me that while the work in Washington is important, my family, my community, and my state need me here – closer to home," he said.

Luttrell insisted he's "not walking away from service" and "certainly not walking away from the fight."

"I’m choosing a different path – one that allows me to stay rooted in Texas and focus on the people and places that matter most," he said.

Luttrell vowed to continue championing faith, family and freedom.

"Texas is where I belong – and it’s where I can do the most good," he said.

He joins several other congressional Republicans who have announced they will not run for reelection in 2026, including Sens. Joni Ernst of Iowa, Thom Tillis of North Carolina, Tommy Tuberville of Alabama, and Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, as well as Reps. Don Bacon of Nebraska and Ralph Norman of South Carolina.

His announcement reverberated through social media.
