CHICO — Sitting on the busy fourth floor of Chico State’s Meriam Library on Wednesday, mechanical engineering student Marina Dear recounted how just a few hours earlier, her roommates came home and told her Charlie Kirk had been shot.

Together, they watched a video of the shooting on Twitter.

Charlie Kirk, the conservative influencer — and President Donald Trump ally known for founding Turning Point USA — was shot and killed at Utah Valley University on Wednesday in front of thousands of people. The assassination-style killing shocked many in the local community, with students such as Dear said that though they did not agree with Kirk’s politics, his death was unjustified.
