MINNEAPOLIS — Businesses that hire off-duty Minneapolis police officers could soon face new fees tied to the use of city uniforms, squads and weapons, as the City Council moves forward with a measure years in the making.

The council voted unanimously Thursday to add the fees to the city’s 2026 budget, despite pushback from Mayor Jacob Frey, who says the department does not yet have the technology or infrastructure to enforce the change.

The policy was first approved earlier this year, after council members argued taxpayers have long subsidized off-duty police work for private companies and venues.
