FARGO — Local gyms are challenging the public to retrace the climb firefighters made at the World Trade Center, symbolically attempting to bring people to safety.

Crunch Fitness in south Fargo is inviting participants to remember the events of Sept. 11, 2001, by climbing 110 flights of stairs on their stair-climbing machines.

First responders are granted free access to the machines and are encouraged to mark their progress during the challenge.

Management said the event was created to honor the bravery of firefighters on 9/11 and the ongoing sacrifices first responders continue to make today.

"We also want to honor those that continue to face that daily sacrifice every single day: firefighters, EMTs, cops, soldiers past and present, just here to honor what they have done," said Christi
