GARY, Ind. — Indiana State Police have taken over the investigation into the shooting death of the wife of a northern Indiana councilman.

According to a release from the Gary Police Department , around 11:25 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 3, officers were called to a residence in the 2300 block of 20th Place , near West Taft Street and West 21st Avenue on the southwest side of the city.

When officers arrived, they found a woman dead at the scene. The Lake County Coroner identified the victim as 47-year-old Nicole S. Mabon-Brewer of Gary and said her cause of death was a gunshot wound.

Mabon-Brewer was married to Lake County councilman Ron Brewer.
