MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WSMV) - Dozens gathered in Rutherford County Thursday morning to mark the 24th anniversary of 9/11.

The event, hosted by Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office, has become an annual tradition for them.

“It’s an honor for us to be able to honor those who lost their lives,” Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh said. “It’s just something that we cherish. We feel that’s it’s very important to bring this reminder.”

Over the course of the event, there was musical act, military tributes and a keynote address by Tennessee’s director of Homeland Security.

Among those in attendance was Marlyse Moran. She says her husband, a former firefighter, assisted with clean up efforts following the plane crash.
