COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio Department of Taxation is warning taxpayers about fraudulent text messages claiming to be from the department and asking for payment information.
According to ODT, the department does not send text messages about tax matters or request payment through text, regardless of how official the messages may appear.
Photos of the fraudulent texts submitted to 10TV include language such as, “Your tax refund claim has been processed and approved,” “Please provide your accurate payment information” and “Failure to submit required payment information ... will result in permanent forfeiture of this refund.”
ODT said taxpayers should not click on links, respond to suspicious texts or share personal information.
