COLUMBUS, Ohio — Fire departments and law enforcement agencies across Ross County gathered Thursday to commemorate the 24th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, holding a parade and remembrance ceremony to honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost that day.

The ceremonies focused particularly on remembering the 343 firefighters who died responding to the World Trade Center attacks as local first responders reflected on the sacrifice of their fellow emergency personnel who rushed into danger to save others.

"Twenty-four years ago, we lost 343 firefighters in one day, in one fell swoop," said Union Township Fire Department Assistant Chief Brian Graves. "For us, a lot of this is that remembrance of people willing to sacrifice for someone they don't know."
