PORTLAND, Ore. — The city is known for progressive politics — most often peaceful demonstrations, but sometimes, clashes between extreme ends of the political spectrum.

KGW spoke with Randall Blazak, a Portland sociologist who is an expert on political violence. He said the country is at a turning point, where people can choose division and more violence, or focus on common values to bring us back to the center.

“Somebody's going to write the history of 2025, and it's gonna be a doozy — and it could be Fort Sumpter, the shot that sent America into a violent bloodbath, or it could be an opportunity for us to take a good look at ourselves and how far we've come in terms of our political instability and choose a different path,” Blazak said.
