NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - The assassination of Charlie Kirk has sparked new conversations about safety for guest speakers at universities and the students who attend their events.

So WSMV checked in with Tennessee universities to learn more about their security plans.

At Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), Police Chief Edwin Kaup said security is always top of mind and that every event gets it’s own customized plan.

“We do something different for every event because every event is different,” Kaup said.

Kaup oversees security for events ranging from football games to graduation ceremonies. The police chief said that MTSU recently added weapons detection systems through a grant. He said the average person might not notice all of the layers of security, like the use of drones.
