CHICO, Calif. – Community members gathered Thursday morning at Chico Fire Station 5 to honor the lives lost in the September 11th terrorist attacks, during a solemn 15-minute tribute marking the 24th anniversary of the tragedy.
Roughly 100 people attended the ceremony, including firefighters, future firefighters, and residents of all ages. The station holds a special connection to 9/11 as it houses a monument dedicated to fallen firefighters — featuring a piece of rubble recovered from the World Trade Center site in New York City.
Among those in attendance were cadets from the Butte Fire Academy — many of whom were born years after the attacks. Despite the passage of time, they say remembering 9/11 remains vital.
