WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Thursday, Congressman Doug LaMalfa introduced the Protect Innocent Victims of Taxation After Fire Extension Act, aiming to extend tax relief for wildfire survivors through 2032.

The bipartisan bill, H.R. 5225, was introduced with support from several congressmen. LaMalfa states that it builds on the Federal Disaster Tax Relief Act, ensuring that wildfire survivors aren't taxed on payments for disaster losses, living expenses, or compensation for injury if the fire was declared a federal disaster between 2020 and 2025.

"People who lose everything in a wildfire should not have to face the added burden of being taxed on payments that are supposed to help them recover," LaMalfa said. "This bill gives wildfire victims certainty and fairness in the tax code."
