IONIA, Mich. (WOOD) — Nine inmates at the Ionia County Jail were taken to the hospital after a carbon monoxide buildup, deputies say.

According to the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office, the buildup stemmed from a malfunctioning boiler, which led to inmates in a nearby unit experiencing headaches and nausea.

The leak was located by the Ionia Department of Public Safety and facility maintenance at the jail isolated it, the sheriff’s office said.

The inmates are expected to make full recoveries, according to the sheriff’s office.
