Troy Johnston, a 28-year-old rookie who entered the day with just one career home run, went deep twice against the Detroit Tigers, including a two-run walk-off shot in extra innings. The Miami Marlins beat the Tigers 6-4 in 11 innings on Saturday afternoon at loanDepot park.
The Tigers (84-65) have lost three in a row and the first two games of the series to the Marlins (70-79). They’ll try to avoid a sweep on Sunday.
Johnston’s second homer capped a wild couple of extra innings.
The Tigers failed to score in the top of the 10th, but the Marlins squandered a chance to win it in the bottom half. With a runner placed on second, No. 9 hitter Javier Sanoja’s bunt was caught on the fly by reliever Will Vest, who spun and fired to second base for a double play.
