IOWA CITY — Kirk Ferentz could not believe the new distinction next to his name after Iowa’s 47-7 win over UMass on Saturday.

After 331 games as the head coach of the Iowa football program, Ferentz became the winningest head coach in Big Ten conference history, passing Ohio State’s Woody Hayes, with 206 wins as the head of the Hawkeyes.

Following the game, Iowa athletic director Beth Goetz congratulated Ferentz on the accomplishment.

“I got to take the opportunity, on behalf of the athletic department, the University of Iowa and all Hawkeyes, to congratulate Coach on this monumental achievement,” Goetz said. “We all can think about the numbers — 206 wins over 27 years — but, it really reflects the impact that he's had on those young men over 1,000 young men he’s coached during that peri
