JACKSON, MI — Residents on Jackson’s southside and nearby neighborhoods are one step closer to having access to fresh food.

Since February, the city has been working to develop land near South Cooper and East Biddle streets, near the Alma Machinery Co. building.

The 5.3-acre site includes two parcels, one owned by the city and the other by Consumers Energy. City Chief Equity Officer John Willis said the city negotiated with the Jackson-based utility to acquire its portion, and a purchase will go before Jackson City Council on Tuesday, Sept. 30.

“I feel great that I’m seeing some movement,” Willis said.
