The Albanese government asked Treasury to model the economic impact of a single 2035 emissions reduction target without climate report findings, a senior official has confirmed.

The single figure was commissioned despite repeated assurances the that the government would only set its target after advice from the Climate Change Authority .

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s cabinet has been expected to land on a 2035 emissions reduction target of between 65 and 75 per cent per cent.

Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell revealed on Tuesday the figure was likely to be even lower than 65 per cent.

However, Treasury First Assistant Secretary Alex Heath has told a senate inquiry her department did not test multiple targets but one “point estimate” for the 2035 goal.
