WAIKIKI, Hawaii (Island News) -- A man was indicted on Tuesday for allegedly beating up an elderly man inside Ross located in Waikiki.
Helkena Carland, 27, was arrested for the alleged assault of a 69-year-old man inside Ross on Seaside Avenue on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2025. Carland was indicted in First Circuit Court on Sept. 16 for first-degree assault.
The Class B felony carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years if the defendant is convicted as charged. Because the victim was older than 60, his sentence could be enhanced where he could face a maximum of 20 years in prison.
"Elder abuse is a deplorable crime and we are committed to pursuing justice in this case," said Prosecutor Steve Alm. "We strive to ensure that our community is safe, especially for our most vulnerable citizens. We
