TEMPE, Ariz. — Another Valley school district is facing the possibility of school closures.
Kyrene School District proposed closing up to nine schools to accommodate declining enrollment.
“For the first time in its 137-year history, Kyrene is considering school closures," Superintendent Laura Toenjes said during a school board meeting on Tuesday.
The district built to educate 20,000 students is currently serving about 12,000 across 25 schools, according to Toenjes.
“This means that our classrooms are sitting empty, resources are spread thin, and it is becoming harder to sustain the things that make Kyrene exceptional," Toenjes said.
