KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - The Knoxville Police Department Wednesday announced the names of three new horses in its mounted patrol unit.

Knoxville Downtown Alliance purchased the horses to expand the unit’s presence in the downtown and Old City areas and at special events.

After receiving more than 4,500 submissions from the community, a committee of representatives from Knoxville Downtown Alliance and KPD selected the final names. They are:

Ranger, a black four-year old Morgan/Pecheron cross

Cormac, a black and white five-year-old Quarter Horse/Belgian-Percheron cross

Summitt, a black six-year-old Quarter Horse/Percheron cross

Ranger’s name was chosen because the committee felt like it fit, Cormac’s name was in recognition of author Cormac McCarthy and his ties to Knoxville and Summi
