KNOXVILLE, Tenn — After receiving thousands of suggestions , the Knoxville Police Department announced the names of three horses who recently joined KPD's Mounted Patrol Unit.
The names are Ranger, Cormac and Summitt. KPD said it received more than 4,500 community submissions as part of the naming campaign.
Ranger is a black, 4-year-old Morgan/Percheron cross. His name was chosen because "it felt like a perfect fit."
Cormac is a black and white, 4-year-old Morgan/Percheron cross. He is named in honor of the author Cormac McCarthy, who grew up in Knoxville and wrote some of his first books here. He attended the University of Tennessee before dropping out to join the Air Force.
Summitt is a black 6-year-old Quarter Horse/Percheron cross. Summitt was named in honor of legendary Lady Vol
