NORTH CHARLESTON — South Carolina's first permanent Global Entry enrollment center is now accepting appointments at Charleston International Airport, offering a new convenience for travelers heading out of the country.

For years, the lack of service in the state has left thousands who are preapproved for the federal program unable to use it because of a scheduling backlog for the mandatory interview and no convenient locations to get it done. South Carolina residents previously had to travel hundreds of miles to cities like Charlotte, Atlanta or Miami for the closest outposts .

Last year, more than 14,000 South Carolina residents were waiting for in-person interview appointments, according to airport officials. The step is necessary for final approval.
