FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — A judge ruled Wednesday that the case against a Fredericksburg man accused of fatally shooting a teenager during a late-night prank will move forward to a grand jury.

Tyler Chase Butler faces several charges, including second-degree murder, after prosecutors say he shot and killed 18-year-old Michael Bosworth during an incident tied to the TikTok "ding dong ditch" challenge in May.

Defense attorneys allege Bosworth and two other teens had scaled a six-foot backyard fence and were kicking and banging on the basement door of Butler’s home around 3 a.m. before running away. Butler, 27, then allegedly emerged with a firearm and fired 10 shots as the boys fled. Bosworth was shot in the back and later died. The other two teens were not seriously injured.
