HOODSPORT, Wash. — Fire crews are continuing to fight eight large wildfires across the Cascades and Olympics, as the state reckons with 14 in total .
The Tunnel Creek fire, sparked by lightning, has grown to 290 acres in the remote Buckhorn Wilderness and remains 0% contained. Less than two-tenths of an inch of rain fell Sunday, temporarily slowing the fire’s progress, but officials say steep terrain has limited suppression efforts and made it difficult to deploy aircraft.
Nearby, the Bear Gulch fire has charred more than 18,000 acres. The fire, caused by humans, is active in the No-name drainage and threatening areas around Lake Cushman and Olympic National Park. Aviation crews remain on standby to protect structures if conditions worsen.
